Rattlesnake

Pole Snap. Green pods with purple striping. Vigorous and heavy producer. Vines can easily reach 10 feet. From my Potter Valley, California donor in 2013.

Red Eye Fall

Pole Dry. Acquired this bean at Karen Golden’s Home in Michigan 2020. I think it’s an Appalachan bean. Eastern Kentucky or Tennessee. I hear people talking about this bean when I’m at a seed swap in or near Appalachia.

Red Willow Leaf

Pole Lima. I’ve grown a white seeded version. Willow leaf limas have narrow leaves that look just like the leaves on a willow tree. The origin of the Willow leaf limas I don’t really know but I would suspect they are probably native American.

Richmond Wonder

Bush Snap. Introduced to Australian vegetable growers in 1947. Bred at the Hawesbury College of Agriculture in New South Wales. The bean is a cross of Clarendon Wonder and Wellington Wonder. Has fleshy pods borne among the foliage. My seed donor is from Hobartville, New South Wales, Australia 2014.

Bush Wax. French yellow podded variety with round slim pods. Widley adapted over many different hardiness zones. My seed donor is from Potter Valley, California 2013.

Santa Maria Pinquito

Semi Runner Dry. Will climb if given support. Late to mature so the vines might need to be pulled out of the ground and hung undercover to dry at the end of the season. The bean has a long history in California quisine. Said to develop and nice pot liquor when simmered.

San Stephano Borlotto d' AVeto

Pole Dry. Vines to 8 feet. Pods to 5 inches, slightly curved with some burgundy streaks which contain very large borlotto (or cranberry) type beans. San Stephano is the name of a church in Aveto, Italy. One of the many beans from Joseph Simcox "The Botanical Explorer".

Pole Dry. My bean friend in Liebenfels, Austria buys beans from the Sarconi company in Italy. This bean has been picked out of a soup mix that Sarconi sold. I would suspect that the beans in their soup mix varies from year to year. Sent to me in 2015.

Saxa

Bush Snap. Bean was bred by David Sachs of Quedlinburg, Germany. David's seed business was known as Seed Nursery of David Sachs. Descriptions of this bean appeared in German seed catalogs as early as 1913. This bean was also used by Sachs to breed another European snap bean called Conserva which was a cross of Alpha and Saxa. Scarlet Beauty

Bush Dry. Bred by Professor Elwyn Meader plant breeder and horticultural professor at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire (1948-1966). The bean was released in 1954. Sold by the Hepler Seed Co. Billy Hepler was 12 when he started his fledgling Seed Co. Parentage: Shelleasy x Rhode Island pole horticulture. This was a purchase from the Vermont Bean Seed Company in 2011.

Senate Soup Navy

Semi Runner Dry. This is the actual bean variety that was grown to make navy bean soup for the U.S. Senate. Not round like a navy bean put more flatened like a Great Northern. Seed donor from Potter, Valley, California 2013.

Pole Dry. Authentic native American bean variety. Gifted to me by native American Stephen McComber of Rooseveltown, New York 2015.

Shelleasy X Soldier

Bush dry. Originally an outcrossed bean from the bean collection of Ernest B. Dana of Etna, New Hampshire. Dana was a member of the Seed Savers Exchange in the 1980's. He sent this bean to John Withee of Wanigan Associates, Lynnfield, Massachusetts 1970. John Withee in turn donated a portion of his Wanigan seed stocks to Seed Savers Exchange in 1981. I acquired a sample of this bean from SSE in 2015.
